Where'd It Go?

This morning in the area where the red square is in the above picture there was a large pole barn. This evening it was GONE! That was after some really high straight line winds came through during some storms around here. The barn has been around for years and I was over looking at it just a few days ago because it was abandoned and there were materials that could be scavenged. I have a feeling now they are between that place and Study Butte 18 miles away. I was out in this storm trying to contain all of the loose stuff around here because it was blowing everywhere!

What's left of the guest house foundation. There was a pretty good bit of HEAVY stuff on it and the tarp was ripped up and pulled away from steel stakes buried in solid rock.
At one time I was wrestling the flipper barrel trying to keep it up against the dungeon and had to give up. I was also out rounding up stuff that has blown out down the south valley that just shouldn't have been able to blow away.
The wind genny going in to Helli mode! Got a lot more that way than this picture shows.

Curtain rod and some screws pulled out with the flap thrown up and over in to the shower. The complex survived though.

A mobile home in the distance looks like it may have been rolled over, but I'll have to investigate that tomorrow.

Just before this all hit one BIG whirlwind came through in front of the dungeon and scarred Pepper so bad that she was making trails down the road in front. I had to yell at her to get her to stop running and finally got her back here and in the dungeon. She was cowering in the back corner after that.

  1. OMGoodness, I might've been cowering in the corner, too.

  2. MC, I might have been to, but had more pressing matters to deal with. Like everything around here trying to blow away. The storm did in just a short time what Pepper has been trying to do ever since she's been here. (Haul all of my stuff off) ;)

I don't know how in the heck the grid survived all of this. I've seen it go down with a lot less wind!

  3. What you experinced was just one of our small Texas whirl winds

  4. Ted, I was born and raised in west Texas so I know all about them. I've also seen my share of tornadoes and funnel clouds. Of course Pepper is a young'en so she didn't have a clue what was going on.

  5. That wish for wind yesterday must have came true! As long as everyone is alive, it was a great day! The hail storms that come thru the hill country are dangerous because it's about 90 degrees and the sun is shining and it looks like a mirage but it is a blanket of ice! If you don't realize it and slow down, you are history! Pepper seems like a city pup, so she has a lot to get ajusted to! I'm glad to see the ranch is getting back in business! I always check their web site for land for sale by owner! The pics are great!

  7. Well the dungon isn't going anywhere. Maybe weld some hooks to the outside to tie stuff to. I know your busy today.

  8. Glad you survived. I have had my share of tornadoes and don't care to ever be near one again. Sure made a mess. Now you will have to go find everything.

Had my eye surgery yesterday and so far so good.

  9. No welding or modifications to the dungeon frann.

Dizzy-Dick, I was outside while this was all going on and I never saw a tornado. There was some really high straight line wind though and I figure that was what did in the barn. There are some usable beams about 4 x 12 and about 12 feet long. Sure wish I was a lot stronger because they are too heavy for me to handle by myself. They sure would make a good foundation for a hut.

Good deal on the surgery. Hope all goes well on both eyes.

  10. LOOKS LIKE A GOOD SOURCE OF FIREWOOD ALSO

  11. Yep... I thought of that, but I'd have to load up the generator and use the chain saw to cut it up. Most of it is still nailed together.

  12. Looks like some good scavenging there. As for that heavy lumber, maybe you could use some debris for a "stone boat"(sled) and drag it behind your car and whatever you want to drag back to your place. Also that skin from the trailer might also make a good sled for your findings.

  13. Scavenger, There's plenty of usable wood there to build a decent hut, but the problem would be getting it separated from the tangled mess. About 4 of those beams would be a good start to a 12x12 building, but only one of them are where I could get to it.

  14. OGT, its a Original Power Powerline #0900-73 and you don't want one. Its already burned out three transformers and it won't run the pump you bought unless either the overhead light is turned on or the laptop is plugged in. That in its self cuts down on the efficiency and gas saving. Really weird inverter even if it is saving me gas. Problem is they dropped that line (probably for those reasons) and evidently the owner of the Cottonwood store got them cheap at a bargain store or something?
