Fold up bunk W/Storage - Grub Shack Update

Abby had posted on her blog about possibly not having a bed to allow more room in her cabin when built. I've been entertaining this idea if and when I ever get my place built. The bunks I built in the old dungeon were exactly 1/2 a king sized bed mainly because I needed the length, but didn't need the width. I already had a memory foam topper for a king sized bed so was able to split that down the middle and stack one on top of the other for a 4 inch thick mattress on the main bunk.  Those bunks worked out well. With this idea it would be about the same, but I'd build a cabinet that would be anchored to a wall and the bunk would fold up into the cabinet leaving a place for storage both under and above it. It wouldn't be like having the full length of a bed sticking out in the room when it was down so it would still be saving space then. the under storage would be big enough to hold a pillow and other stuff (maybe clothing) and the same for the top three storage areas. With the right tools and a good grade of wood it wouldn't be hard to build.

It could also be used for guest seating and putting the foam up and leaving the bunk down could also serve as a dining table.

Grub Shack Update
Went to the mailbox once I got the battery charged on the falcon. (It was dead this morning) Anyway the backhoe is parked across from the GS and looks like they will start installing the septic system before long. Will sure be good to be able to get food out this way again.

  1. Very cool! Sort of a modified Murphy bed with bonus storage spaces. I like :) And the bottom of the bed could have a big piece of art on it, or a fold down desk for day use...

  2. Hadn't thought about the art or fold down desk, but those are both good ideas. It would be wide enough perhaps you could have both.

BTW I added another couple of options at the bottom of the thread that you probably didn't see.

  3. Good idea, David. When are you going to apply for the patent?

  4. Well DD, I guess its public domain now? Of course some AH will probably start building them and get rich off of them. Maybe sell them to the military for $50,000 a copy. ;)

  5. I like the idea! you were telling me the other day about it and I pictured it like you drew it, nice.

Was suprised Abby liked it though, she has been getting so minimal I picture her future place like a cell in leavenworth prison. ;)

  6. Should be a lot more comfortable than the floor, other benefits and wouldn't take up much room. I figure it could work out pretty good even for a place the size of a cell. :)

  7. Been doing a little more thinking and an old king or queen sized water bed frame would probably be a real good start to one of them.

  8. How about a loft bed with a fold up attic ladder i put one in the hunting cabin and the bed was over the wood stove so it was always warm..But you dont need heat where you are ..is there 3ft of room over your head thats all you need for a loft bed..

  9. Bed idea looks good. Don't forget to leave extra recessed "storage" space for the blankets / sheets / pillow(s) when the bed is folded up - that way you wont have to completely remake your bed each night. Just give the bedding a good straightening and tucking-in in the morning, shove the pillows in the recessed space and close up the bed till later LOL

Thanks for the GS update - am thinking of you guys. Can't bear the thought that anyone of you is going hungry...

  10. Left a comment on Frann's page. I am in the area this weekend and would like to meet some of you guys... so email me if that might be possible. Love the bed idea! The update on the GS is appreciated.

  11. Ricky, I think she wants to sleep in the same room with her dogs and that might not work?

Dani, I found out from Nick yesterday that the backhoe belonged to the county I think it was and not the septic installer so I was mistaken about them getting ready to start. Not sure when that will be now?

Cindy, I read your post on Frann's blog, but unless you want to stop by here not much way I can meet up. I've got 2 days left to get the dungeon cleaned out and the contents in the tank so I'm going to be VERY busy for the next two days. I'm going to have to make a trip south this morning, but it will be a whirlwind trip for supplies and a shower only.

  12. Yes, David, my dogs would go insane if I slept in a loft bed and they couldn't get up there. Too bad, because there are so many thing you can build *under* a loft - desk, dresser, closet, etc. Plus, my knees aren't so good, and while I can always get on the floor, getting up in a loft would be impossible on a bad knee day.

  13. Have you ever considered sleeping in a hammock?

Just hook it up at night and unhook it in the morning.

  14. I know the feeling Abby. Its tough for me to get up off of the floor so I try not to get down there to start with. ;)

  15. I learned how to get up from the floor using my arms. It's not the most graceful thing you'll ever see, but it works :) Remind me to show ya how next time I'm out there.

  17. tffnguy, don't know if it will work out, but will try to stop by with Frann on Saturday or Sunday... if not, will have to meet up another time. Good luck with your tasks for the next few days.

  18. Abby, the older you get the tougher it gets. I've got a torn rotor cuff in my left shoulder so that leaves me with one good arm to get up with.

Cindy, Frann came over today to help me move stuff out of the dungeon. She didn't say anything about coming back over the weekend.
