Near by Fire

I saw this yesterday and sure thought it looked like a fire, but the wind was up and there were storms in the area so I finally dismissed it as dust. However, when my neighbor Robert showed up for coffee this morning he confirmed that it was a fire and had his camera with pictures of it. He is the one that took all these pictures. Fortunately the fire fighters (probably with help from some rain) got it under control and put out fast. This is just east of here between Black mountain and 9 points Mesa. Way too close for comfort and if it hadn't been put out the people on the other side of 118 would have been in big trouble. Matter of fact us on this side of 118 probably would have been to because the wind changed to from out of the east later and it was high enough that it could have easily caused the fire to breach 118 and start on this side.

  1. Glad they got it out. You know, this year so far, you all have got more rain than I did here in E. TX. Normal here would should have been measured in feet instead of 10ths of an inch.

  2. Me to DD, We did get a few more sprinkles yesterday evening, but the rain was to the East, West, North and South. We got plenty of high wind again though and it sure is getting unnerving after the flying metal incident!

  5. Well, gonna try this one more time. lol, had to work on cookies. NOT the eating kind either!!
Here in Llano County, we had firemen chasing fires all over the county, couple of days ago, and some of the reports were dust, looking like smoke. 2 weren't tho. They went here, they went there, they went alllll over the place,,,,

  6. HJ, Me to, but the way that works is you feel for anyone in the path of the fire while being relieved that you aren't in the path. Of course things can change real easily down here. (I guess anywhere)

TROUBLEnTX, we see enough of the blowing dust storms down here to know the difference. The clouds are brown and these were black. They were also rising straight up where the dust rises at an angle going the direction of the wind. The reason I dismissed it as a sand storm is because I didn't actually see the fire. That didn't mean it wasn't there though. I actually saw the smoke go between Black Hill and 9 Points. I think Black Hill is about 3 miles from here.

  7. Glad that one missed you. This drought, and all these fires are really making me nervous.

  8. Allen, there's more rain in the area, but just a few sprinkles here. The grass is starting to green up, but evidently its still a tinderbox around here and other places.

  10. Tig, I haven't had any of the red stuff for ages, but if you ever come down this way I'll buy a big jug just for you. ;)

I've decided to back the shooting station off another 61 feet and make it an even 300 feet (Football field) shoot. May build some sort of a blind there for future use. I found a composite stock for the rifle ($59 on ebay) so will likely get one instead of trying to repair the old wooden stock. I didn't know the composite stocks were that cheap. Those stocks have a rubber shock pad on them so that should lessen the sore shoulder some. Who knows? A scope might be in the works eventually and I'll be trying one of those 1000 yard shots. :)
