Adopt a Highway / Legion update

The Legion has a two mile strip of highway 118 to clean up a couple of times a year. We did that yesterday and I understand that hasn't been done in about 4 years. Lots of trash and lots of fun (NOT). Only six of us showed up, but we got'er done. We were treated to some very large 1/2 pounder hamburgers prepared by Dave Secor yesterday afternoon for our efforts.

As most may already  know I plan to run for Commander of the Legion next month. Zano says he is burned out and wants out so I figured I'd give it a try. Its starting to look like I'll probably be elected to the post.

Actually Commander is a strong word and it isn't the job of the Commander to command anything. A commander of a Legion post is actually a Public Servant that tries to lead the legion toward being a benefit to the community. I hope I'll be up to that.

For now its only the American legion because the Woman's Auxiliary and the Sons of the Legion were disbanded for some reason before I came here or shortly there after. I hope to with the help of the community and members to bring both back. I also hope to get some old eX members to come back. I guess time will tell...

  4. If I could vote...you would have mine!

    Looks like after four years there would be quite a bit of trash to pick up but luckily you got that out of the way.

    A big juicy hamburger sounds real good right now...can you tell I'm hungry :-(

  5. Pablo, The American Legion is a national veterans organization with branches in most cities. This one is very small compared to most though. They are nonprofit and raise funds to help out local charities and try to help out the community. None of the officers receive pay its all volunteer (Including the commander) The bar manager does get paid, but not very much.

    MsB, I imagine we will start doing the cleanup at least twice a year so that should help.

    Howdy 'Commander',
    Have you picked out your successor?? Hope that your plans work out for the Post.. As a land-based member of the US Navy, I was never able to serve in the Legion, but did get to play baseball for them in high school.. We lost our Legion Post before I came to Coleman county; don't know when.. Town's run by women; CofC, mayor, ?newspaper? etc..
    Believe me, I do hope you can enthuse the qualified people in the area to help you.. God bless!!!

    1. Land based US Navy sounds like you are not eligible for the VFW but would be for the American Legion.
      VFW: If you have received a campaign medal for overseas service; have served 30 consecutive or 60 non-consecutive days in Korea; or have ever received hostile fire or imminent danger pay, then you're eligible to join our ranks.
      Legion: If have served honorably during any of the following eligible war eras, we invite you to become a member of The American Legion.
      * Aug. 2, 1990 to today (Gulf War / War On Terrorism)
      * Dec. 20, 1989 to Jan. 31, 1990 (Panama)
      * Aug. 24, 1982 to July 31, 1984 (Lebanon / Grenada)
      * Feb. 28, 1961 to May 7, 1975 (Vietnam War)
      * June 25, 1950 to Jan. 31, 1955 (Korean War)
      * Dec. 7, 1941 to Dec. 31, 1946 (World War II)
      * April 6, 1917 to Nov. 11, 1918 (World War I)

  10. I sent an email about joining and was told that my husband could, since his Dad was a Veteran in the Marine Corp. in the Pacific during WWII. I was told that I could not join because there was no Womens Auxillery. My Dad was in Europe in the Army Air Corp. The job I just retired from was at the VA as a Rating Veterans Service Representative. We are in the process of moving to Terlingua. I am willing to help Veterans file claims. Would that help? We're not there yet, but will be shortly.

  11. Anon, as I said I hope to bring back both the Women's Auxillery and Sons of the Legion and if successful you would be able to join. As for as helping veterans file claims that would be great. That wouldn't be the only thing you would be able to help with.

    However, I understand someone else is planning to run for commander also so if that happens and they were to get elected I wouldn't have much (If any) say about how the place would be run.

  12. Oh BTW as far as I know right now the Sons of the Legion is nonexistent so you're husband wouldn't be able to join that unless it is brought back.
