SNOW Bomb

It appears as though the Air Force has a new secret weapon. Took the picture of a B-52 strafing this place yesterday and now we get hit by a snow bomb! Not only that, but it subjected me to what I think was by far the highest wind I've ever been in! (and I've experienced some mighty high winds being raised in west Texas to start with.) I wonder how effective it will be toward getting rid of insurgents? Sure is working on me because I'm ready to head a lot further south! (Maybe as far south as the equator!) Note in the picture of the snow that the guest house is still standing. I don't have a clue how because the wind was probably at least well above the minimum hurricane force. As near as I can figure the wind was blowing from out of the west north west and the guest house is east south east (down wind of the container). Maybe the container helped block some of the wind or the stakes being driven in to solid rock did the trick?

BTW I remember coming back from Viet Nam and stopping over in Guam where they were refueling the plane. It was a B-52 base at the time and one guy pulled out a camera and took some pictures of the B-52s out the window of the airport. An AP (Air Police) walked over to him and seized his camera, took the film out and then handed him his camera back with strict instructions NOT to take anymore pictures there. Hope I don't get busted for taking the picture above. ;)

I'm composing this offline because the internet here is hit or miss and its more on the MISS side than the hit side. May be a good bit later before I can update the blog. I'm probably going to be suffering from Cabin Fever in the mean time because I refuse to get out in this crap. (other than maybe a quick trip out to survey the wind damage.) At least I was able to make my morning coffee in here. I think its supposed to warm up a good bit tomorrow though??? Don't have a clue how much propane is left in the two tanks, but I sure hope they don't both run out today (or tonight!)

Had to make a trip to Study Butte to have both propane tanks refilled and on the way in I was thinking "Now WHY didn't I bring the camera? The mountains were still snow capped, and looked beautiful, but I thought maybe they would still be when I get back. Unfortunately only the higher ones were and not near as much. You can still make out the snow on the far mountain, but its gone everywhere else.

  1. I'm surprised you got some snow. We were supposed to get some here in Dallas today, but, it never came.

It's a good thing that you got the container insulated when you did. It will do you good to get out of the "cabin" and go for a walk around. It'll feel real nice to come back inside and warm back up.

    Good luck, and stay safe.

  3. Allen, Had to get out and fire up the charger so I didn't have much choice in going out. The heavy coat, toboggan and gloves helped a lot. The sun has been trying to come out so I HOPE the snow is over? The wind is now down to mild hurricane force. ;) It was good to get out for a few minutes though and I didn't see any wind damage other than a lot of stuff rearranged.

OGT, yep... Who would have ever thought it would snow so much in the desert? I think its the third time I've seen it since I've been down here. First two times were at the BBMI though. Its getting too late in the season for this crap!

  4. As I figured... both propane tanks are just about completely empty so I guess there's an unscheduled trip to Study Butte in my future. Hope the guy that fills the tanks feels like getting out and doing it.

  5. We got five inches, FIVE INCHES, here in Abilene ... unheard of ... making it a total of 13 inches this winter.

I have seen more snow in the past two months, than I have in my entire 40 year life.

I'm glad you're still hanging in there, and are warm.

  6. It would be cool to have a garage/workshop to at least have shelter but also room to tinker while the weather is bad. I would imagine that being cooped up with little space might drive someone mad; it would me. On the bright side at least you have some warm daytime temps.

  8. Scavenger, that's the idea, but unfortunately that will be a good ways off. I've spent way too much time on the computer either working offline, trying to get connected or online so had to charge the batteries a good bit earlier than usual.

Mama Crow, Hate to hear that IF you're the type that don't like snow like me. You can expect it there far more than down here though. It just ain't right. It just ain't right I tell ya!

  9. Crazy weather indeed. Snow in the deep south while Alaskans are complaining about the warm weather. The last 2 winters I was wallowing in 2 feet of the white stuff. This year I've only had an inch on the ground at any one time, and darn few times at that.

  11. Bob, you're right. I sure hope this isn't going to become the new Alaska or the next land I buy may be up there to get some warmth.

Mama Crow, I'm ready for some of that global warming down here. Of course when it get here I may be wishing it would go away to though.

  13. Xilia Faye, Hope all goes well with the move and its everything you expect it to be. No need to say there are a lot of hardships down here (some that I have not experienced yet), but the country is beautiful and I think I'll make it through the summer ok to. (I'm much more of the like it hot person than the like it cold person) Matter of fact I hate cold weather period and I've seen too much of it already! Glad you found my blog. Didn't know Allen had had a site so guess I better check it out.

  14. David, you can get a special tape the sticks to the side of the tanks that changes colors as the bottle empties. Should be pretty cheap. We got a little of your snow last night, also. Doesn't stick though. Hang tough. Dennis

  15. Dennis, hopefully the real need for propane other than cooking will be over by the time the bottles are empty again. I plan on not using the heat of any kind any more than I have to. That means crawling out of the sack when its pretty cold, but at least I sleep warm under all the cover and the big heater heats it up fast and the burner keeps it that way while I'm making coffee.
