What we've got here is FAILURE! *

Another one of those days, but I did get something accomplished. That was getting my bed turned in to a bunk bed since my brother in law will be bringing me a couple of burn barrels and a welder that will run on my generator. First problem came when the charger I built kept dieing so I had to mess with that. Then wanted to check the voltage on both banks so disconnected the jumper cables from one bank and just threw them down. What a dope! Ever seen a set of jumper cables fry? Anyway I didn't notice that and it completely drained the main bank so I had to recharge it once I got the charger to keep running. Then I got the top part of the bunk built and couldn't get it through the door so had to dissemble it and bring it in here and reassemble it. It has been pretty nice here so far, but the wind is getting up some. Not sure I'll try to get anything else done or not, but I had intended to put up a clothes line. I can handle going to the laundry and washing, but that last 40 minutes waiting for the clothes to dry is a real DRAG! I figure I'll start washing in Study Butte and then dry the clothes on a line here. At least I could spend the extra time doing something worth while around here.

MAJOR UPDATE

Well Folks! That ain't fog you see  in the picture of the mountain. Its sand! We just got hit by one of the infamous Terlingua SAND storms! Not only that, but as you can see in the picture of the guest house the guesthouse won't survive this wind. Its a direct side shot. Not only that, but right after I snapped that photo my trailer took off like a schooner and rammed it tongue first ripping it up even worse.

The prop rod for holding the north door of the container open blew down and the door blew around and slammed shut mangling the post hole diggers that had also been leaning up against it to. Took all I could do to buck the wind opening it back to the container side and then trying to prop it back against the side of the container. I had to chase down my 5 gallon gas can, my bedding which had been on the trailer and the solar lights in front of here are scattered to the wind, but I'm smiling that old Luke Smile. ;)

Dale, looks like you'll need to get here early so we can build a couple more bunks for in here.

After the sand & rain

The end of another day!

  1. I think the bunk will be a multipurpose deal. Good for a guest to sleep on and for me to knock my head off on and scrape my back.

  2. I don't see failure at all ... and I think you are communicating rather well :)

  3. "He was smiling... That's right. You know, that, that Luke smile of his. He had it on his face right to the very end. Hell, if they didn't know it 'fore, they could tell right then that they weren't a-gonna beat him. That old Luke smile. Oh, Luke. He was some boy. Cool Hand Luke. Hell, he's a natural-born world-shaker."

  4. The bunks are looking great! You can use some of that bed crate foam stuff for the bedding. The twin size ones are really cheap like at Wally World and fairly comfortable.
I know this is another expense but will pay for itself in the long run...google Haier portable washers. Im looking to get one at some point and just use a clothesline to dry.
I have enjoyed reading about your journey. ~jen

  5. Dang you're scaring me with the update ... of course, we get sand storms all the time, but it seems even fiercer out there.

Here's another Movie quote, from Luke himself:

"Yeah, well, sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand."

I have faith everything will be alright ... including you.

  6. MC, sure an easier handle to type than the old one. ;) Yeah... just another few set backs. Nothing I can't deal with. I'm still smill'in especially since I found a Yo...Ho...Ho... bottle or rum stashed back for days like this.

  7. Better now than in two weeks, it would have been a rough ride inside the guest house when that happened. We'll help do whatever needs to be done. But I know Ring is going to be there before us, yall will have everything ship shape by then.

  8. I like my new handle better, too.

Your postings today made me think of a Van Morrison song ...

"When no one steps on my dreams there'll be days like this. When people understand what I mean there'll be days like this. When you ring out the changes of how everything is. Well my mama told me there'll be days like this ... there'll be days like this, Mama said."

Take it easy on that rum till at least nightfall :)

  9. How about 3 dog night and "Mama told me not to come." ;)

Ah... I still love this place!

  10. Jen, I have 4 inches of memory foam on my bunk, but it could use another couple of inches. Isn't bad though. My brother in law is bringing some foam for the other bunk so no problem there.

Dale, I'd imagine that wouldn't have been a fun night in the guest house! One thing... No BEANS when you'll get here. This place is small and tight! ;)

  11. I'd never tell you that.

Give me a challenge, and the freedom to meet it, every time.

But, then again, I'm not yo mama either.

    Dang this is fun :)

  12. Failure is just another learning opportunity. I was wondering what it might be like trying to build under your conditions(location). For being in a remote location you sure do have your share of excitement :)

  13. With all these winds had been thinking about you and how your guest house had been holding up, guess I got my answer...

I agree with MC, I do not see failure at all, just a small set back. You got your bunk beds built and the guest house did not fly away:-)

Glad you have some spirits around for days like this. Hang in there, I am rooting for you!!

  14. looks like the wind just made a terlingua salad outta yer stuff. Hang in there!

  15. Lost power in this area after my last attempt to post and evidently the router I get internet from was on grid. I finally went to the legion and hung out for a couple of hours with a few more people. (by candle light) The power was still off when I came back to the dungeon so with no internet to occupy my time I crashed. BTW it came a rain or should I say MUD after the wind died down. Problem is I had some stuff in the guest house I didn't want to get wet. Guess I'll deal with that tomorrow. (If the wind will go down and stay that way.) Now it is windy as heck again. I noticed that after the wind died down while it was showering that the guest house stood back up like a trooper so it may be salvageable with some duct tape for the hole the trailer tongue caused. I may be able to use a tarp for a bonnet because the one that is on it is totaled.

  16. I love those last three photos of the day, and hope you are having a spectacular day.

  17. MC, its windy as heck around here again so I'm cooped up in the dungeon again. I guess I can find enough to do to keep from going nuts though. Looks like one side benefit of the power outage was that something got rebooted and this internet is back up to speed again.

  18. Good to hear your internet is working better, I sure hope this crazy weather settles down to something manageable in the next couple of weeks. We've had rain all day today and supposed to get a couple of nice days then rain comes back for this next weekend. I guess I'm going to have to get out and do a rain go away dance the middle of next week or so. Those last 3 pictures are spectacular, I love the colors. Defiantly looking forward to seeing some of those.

  19. I'm planning a visit down there real, real soon ... I hope and pray the weather welcomes me like a good, and thoughtful, host.

  20. No doubt the wind is the number 1 problem down here, but the weather here has really been screwy so far from what I hear from the old timers. A little wind isn't bad, but this stuff we are having now and have had lately keeps me inside. Just not worth putting up with it and the cool temp at the same time. If it was in the high 70s or 80s I'd probably put up with the wind and get out and do some work.

MC, when you get down this way stop by and we'll plot against OGT. ;)

  21. I knew everyone was out to get me. "the paranoid are never caught by surprise" <someone said that I think.

  22. I think ~mc~ is already plotting against OGT. He posts by the initials MC on other sites and I was real confused when I saw ~mc~ here.

Thanks Mama Crow and OGT for keeping my brain exercised!

  25. That's "You'll are cracking me up." Ziva ;)

  26. Made. Me. Smile.

(When my nephew was four years old, I did something he thought was absolutely hilarious. With a deep belly-laugh, he said, "Oh, Aunt B, you just cracked me out!" The precious phrase has stuck ever since. Get used to it.)

    Smiling. Again.

  27. I'm thinking that's a reference to one of the agents on NCIS. She's suppose to be from Israel, so english is not her first language. Therefor she miss says many of our slang terms and is always being corrected by one of the other agents. It's a great show if you've never seen it.

  28. And Dale wins the prize for the best answer. I assumed everyone had watched that series at least a few times.

  29. Hey , didnt you see my post of hebrew? Ziva is a female name the male form is Ziv, meaning "beloved" can be used as a word but usually not singlular like that.Normally they use the term Motek meaning sweetie. If you want to say "my love", it would be "ahuvi" instead of "motek". I never saw the show so I assume her hebrew name is Ziva. How do I know? Ani meteber ivrit. lachon? by the way I typed in my last post " hi friend "in the hebrew characters.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Right, the characters name is Ziva David. I'm sure you know the last name is not our David, but Daveed. It's a very good show and she's a very strong character.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Dadgummit. I looked up the word for my own Self and thought he was saying I was beloved, brilliant, full of splendor even.

    *kicks dirt*

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yeah Yeah Yeah! She is a sweetie and she is beloved by many. (Including me!) Sorry, but I got named the wrong name, but I'm stuck with it so beloved or not you'll's is stuck with me. Now cool it or I'll put an ancient Mayan curse on you both. It goes like this "Hula Hula Hula". and you do the abra kadabra hand thing while saying it. Very powerful curse! Its stops rain and wind, makes you go bald or look like a hairy ape Well you get the idea. Problem is it doesn't work down here.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yes `mc` you are surely beloved. Anyone want to hold up their hand besides me? ;)
