Sun Rise

Nice Sun Rise this morning.
Looks like things are starting to move in a posative way! The radiator is supposed to arrive Thursday so with any luck with the weather I should be able to get that taken care of and maybe spend Friday and Saturday out at the land doing what I can. okeefe1955 was able to get me in touch with someone who could give me the phone number of where to rent a storage container so I'll check in to getting one of those on the land hopefully around the first part of next month. If so I may be able to get out of this place by the 15th of January!

  1. Just read yesterdays' blog and comments. I can sorta understand you not wanting to buy a long tape, but it's small insurance cost against someday down the road when your neighbor informes you that his survey company has determined that your house is built 1/2 on his land.

  2. What about using something you may already have or will need later (like a garden hose or rope)? You could spend one snowy evening marking off increments with a Sharpie or duck tape...and of course, a brew or two.
Just a thought. Love the blog. Please send more pictures. Good Luck from Virginia.

  3. Not to worry! The way I plan to find the corners is not going to a permanent fix or anything like that. Its just meant to be a quick way to give me a reasonable idea of where the corners are. I probably will at some point get the land surveyed, but for now this should do. I'm not going to put up a fence or build anywhere near the borders of the land so that isn't a problem. If I remember correctly I was standing at the driveway when I took that GPS reading (Which according to my method of measuring would be about 94 feet in to my property. Probably not much chance of the google stickpins being that far off and when I build or do what ever it is that I will be doing it will be to the right of that (which will be even further in to the land boundaries). I don't plan to modify the land or clear it. I like it the way it is. I will be clearing for a good ways around the driveway and living area though so as to give myself some insulation in case of a fire out that way and also to be able to see any visitors coming (snakes) and rid them of hiding places near where I'll be living.

BTW I have updated todays Blog main page.

  4. Glad to hear everything is moving along well. Look forward to seeing you get the shipping container and how everything gets laid out.

From looking at the rocky landscape I didn't think fire was that big of a hazard in your area but I do understand it gets real dry at times.

  5. Scavenger, if you don't want rocks then you need to stay away from the two counties you mentioned before. That's about all you will find down there. Al least you can find some dirt around here. There is plenty of stuff that could burn around here. Don't know how often that might happen though. When Chuck ? (Can't remember his last name)came by here the other day he gave me a good tip on how to take care of the native grass on the land. He said you can push a shovel down the center of the clumps and push the handle over and it will just pop out of the ground. There is plenty of that around where I'll want to live so I'll want to get rid of it. I figure I can use the rocks to make a fire pit like John Wells built to burn that in.

  6. I don't mind rocks but ideally it would be nice to be able to dig down a little. When the time comes to buy land soil will not be an overiding factor. What I need to do is just get down there and check out the towns and people in person. Most of my research has been mostly around Van Horn. The Lobo valley looks nice, Dell City is an option. Terlingua to Marfa seems to be going up in price from the artsy type crowd. It would be cool to try "green the desert" though. What ever happened to the people who were rebuilding Lobo?

  7. I've never been to Lobo so couldn't say. There is an interesting story (Facts) about Van Horn though that few people know about. I learned about the first part of it by working there at the time, but didn't learn about the second part until about 30 years later when my neighbor in Plano found out I'd worked on the project. He was interested in hearing about it and when I told him he filled me in on the rest. It had to do with stuff you would expect to happen in Vegas though and not some small dirt water town in Texas. If you ever come down here remind me and I'll tell you about it.
