Chili cook off / This and that

Made a trip south to Study Butte yesterday even though I figured there would be a lot of these down there.
Dave also needed to  go along to get supplies and that was the reason I was pressed in to taking a chance on going south. I was out of supplies and didn't want to go hungry. As we topped the hill and headed in to SB it almost looked like a ghost town as there was no traffic at all on 118. I also needed gas and decided to stop at BBMI for breakfast since I hadn't eaten there in a long time.

Sort of wish we hadn't eaten there then because they had the damn buffet which meant scrambled eggs made from powdered eggs which are always LOUSY! So was the really greasy bacon, sorry pancakes, sausage that isn't fit to feed to a dog much less a human. Matter of fact I'd doubt that most dogs would even eat it. Actually about the only thing that was good was the coke I had to go with it. Worst part was it was too damn high for the slop served. They should have been paying people to eat it instead of charging for it.

Anyway I got enough gas after that to get me to Alpine next week where the gas will probably be about 25 cents a gallon cheaper. After that it was on to the Cottonwood store for supplies and then back north to home. I got just enough supplies to last me until I go to Alpine where groceries are a good bit cheaper. On the way back by the BBMI we saw the only DPS cruiser we saw the whole time we were there, but I'd imagine that changed by yesterday evening and last night. They were probably wall to wall.

My niece Madaleine Alexander caught the below picture at the airport the other day and I thought it was so cool I'd share it here. Hope she doesn't mind. :)

This is a C5A cargo plane (I think the biggest US plane we have. From what I hear just the fuel in one of these weighs more than a fully loaded 747. I also hear they will carry 9 greyhound buses at once. Watching them fly is something else. They are so large that they look like they are flying so slow that they could fall out of the sky at any time. We have the B1s, B52s and C130s that make low level runs down here all the time, but I sure wish these flew down here to.

Here's the S.O.T.P. for this post.

  1. Wow, that plane really is low. With his nose up position I would guess he is flying very slow or starting to climb. When is the book off over?

  2. Gas prices do vary from town to town along with groceries. Ours has gone down to $3.03 a gallon.
You mention all kids of DPS workers on the road, why, is that just usual there?

There is nothing better than seeing military planes flying and smelling jet fuel. I miss living on base.
    Have a great weekend!

  3. DD, according to my niece it was doing touch and goes. I think the cook off ends tomorrow, but there will be a bunch of chili heads around for a good while. Not sure when all the heat will leave, but hopefully by Tuesday. There will be a steady stream of traffic leaving the area tomorrow.

Sandy, all the DPS, extra sheriff's deputies, ICE, and every other law enforcement agency you can think of shows up here every year when they have the chili cook off and they all leave after its over and most of the chili heads are gone. The DPS is real bad about harassing anyone on the highway during that time. They will pull people over for about anything and everything including dirty license plates. I think they must send about half the Texas state troopers down here! Most of us locals try to be stocked up and stay off the highway during it. Unfortunately I didn't get that done this year.

  4. I thought the BBMI breakfast was some of the best food I had while down a couple of weeks ago. The waitress even told me they would fix the eggs any way I wanted if I didn't want the scrambled eggs on the buffet. What I can't stand is that damn chili pepper cafe that everyone eats at. The food all tastes the same...and is cookid with dog food quality chicken and beef. Yuck.

  5. There is no way they could please every one on any buffet. Likes and dislikes are all a matter of personal opinion and taste. Just because you did not like it just means that you did not like it, nothing else. You opinion is worth no more or less than anyone elses. But you do seem to be a bit over the top on your critique. As far as all the law enforcement in the area at the cook off, I wonder what your comments would be if there was none and some drunk smashed into you and sent you to the hospital for six months, then you would likely would be bitching about how they were not there when you needed them.

  6. Chris, I've never been given that option. It was either take it or leave it and I know the waitress and store manager well. I have a lot of friends that say the same about the crap they serve on the buffet. Their breakfast that you order cooked to your liking is great. I've never had a problem with that. The Chili Pepper sucks to. No doubt about that.

BfA, See the above. The crap sucks! I wonder how it would be if there wasn't a chili cook off down here and we didn't have to worry about all the heat down here? Fact is the chili heads aren't idiots. They bring in about everything they need (to save $$$) so they don't help out the economy that much. A side from that Kiss my... Well you know. You don't live here and don't know what you're talking about.

    Very nice song.
    Extra nice comment to BfA.

Glad you made it there and back without any hassle.

  8. Rubye Jack,

    Thanks
    Thanks
Last I heard this is or was a free country and you can pretty near say what you like although there are always those trying to make it not so.

  9. As expected 118 is very busy with outbound traffic. Pretty near a steady flow and if I remember correctly that will last most of the day with even heavier traffic later on.

  10. David, I hear there is only one gas station down there now, is that true? Since you got gas at the BBMI I'm guessing that dope whore car thief Mariah must have run the Study Butte store in the ground.
And where in the Hell is Athens?

  11. Bkid, yes BBMI is the only game in town for gas now and they were also the only game in town for propane until Rick at the Cottonwood put in a propane exchange. That's only for 20 pound bottles though so if you need larger ones filled its either BBMI or head for Alpine.

From what I hear Mariah is still a minor and is limited on what she can do. The propane has been taken back too the place it was bought from and the feds have taken the liquor from the liquor store. I think they've sold off most of the store's stock and I figure its a goner just like the Grub Shack. I heard yesterday that Mariah went back to Alaska or where ever she was before Ringo died.

  12. David, That sucks. Well I don't know if it was Alaska but I know that they abandoned my car in Billings Montana at a Wal mart.
Anyway it seems that there's not much hope for Turdlingua in the future.

  13. Bkid, I talked to some chili heads while they were down here and that were really bummed about the SB store being closed. (They said that was the first place they headed when they got down here.) Probably liquor store? Speaking of Liquor store the other one has now gone NUTS on their prices now that they're the only game in town. I'm sure grocery prices, gas and propane have all gone up since the SB store closed.

  14. BTW sorry to hear about the car!

  15. I thought I was going nuts when I saw the liquor prices at the liquor store there. I figured a designated store had to be cheaper than the BBMI.... NOPE!

  16. Some people will stick it to you just because the can Chris.

  17. Hopefully, the trooper is there in case someone puts Beans in their Chili!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Matt M, probably not the case unless the troopers are actually searching for beans instead of claiming to be looking for open containers and drugs in the vehicles. You never know though?

Bkid, yep that's what it is.

  19. I was out your way last week and was gonna stop by. Between bein busy and lazy we didn't make it. :)
I got gas at the BBMI and it was actually cheaper than Stripes in Alpine.
From an old post: I asked the border patrol agent at the inspection station what all the stuff was on the other side of road and he said he didn't have a clue. That it was no way tied to or anything to do with the border patrol. Well what the hell is it then?!

  20. OGR&D, the gas has beep pretty cheap at BBMI lately for some reason. That is a VERY unusual thing though. Its usually about 25 or more cents per gallon than in Alpine. Maybe it was because of all the gas being bought while the cook off was going on or something. Doubt they felt guilty for having too high of prices.
