OUTHOUSE or NOT? That is the question.

First off to set the record straight this is NOT an outhouse in the old fashion term. This will be a composting system of sorts. Note in the picture there is no basement in this outhouse. It is just outside and will probably stay that way. I may add a shower to the side of it later? I'll update pictures on this thread as I go along.

For the foundation for this outhouse I drilled about a foot deep through solid plate rock and then added lag bolts. Then I cemented them in to the rock so if the wind takes this outhouse then it will have its work cut out for it. I used up the last bag and a half of concrete to pour a foundation, but could have used another bag, but wasn't going to go back to Alpine (58 miles) to get one. I'm sure it will do even if it does look like a crappy job. It is! I used most of the ice melt water I've been storing up for it and the swivel for the wind generator so will have to start saving that up again before I start pouring more concrete next time.

I got the 12x20 tarp put over the guest house and hopefully secured enough to keep the tent down and stay in place. If need be I'll drill more places for stakes to anchor it and pound in more stakes for the tie downs. Should do the trick?

Last is a view from here early this morning. It did get partly cloudy later (mostly sunny, but is starting to get more clouds popping up. Hopefully for me no rain tonight, but I'm sure that those who are already setup for water catchment it would be nice.

  1. You may be building that for crappy reasons, but I don't think it looks like a crappy job at all.

Love watching your creative problem-solving skills in action, and always love your additional scenic snapshots :)

  2. MC, I'd have much rather had a pure sunshiny day, but I have a feeling before long I'll be wishing for cloud cover. Its already starting to warm up and lately its nice to wake up and have it warm enough in here as not to have to use the mega heater. Just the burner to make coffee is more than enough to knock the chill off.

  3. Speaking of weather, I suppose I ought to pack for ALL temps, huh?

  4. Sure wouldn't hurt, but I hope the cold is about over. Problem is every time someone says that we get a surprise. Usually at some point during the day its t-shirt weather unless the wind is up. That's even if its been a cold night usually. Once the sun comes up it starts warming up pretty quick.

  5. I don't know what it's like out there, but I know here in DFW we're going to have a freeze around Easter, seems like we always do anyway. I'm hoping for an end to the cold, but it does seem to be hanging on this year. On our trip out there I can handle the cool but can live without the rain. So the up and down temps will be fine to miss any rain. Looks like your getting a lot done. See ya soon.

  6. Dale, the forecast looks pretty good through Friday, but unfortunately that doesn't include a wind prediction. I guess that isn't possible or at least a week in advance.

  7. I've been freezing all day here in Abilene ... chilly and rainy here ... I think I'm getting sick though so that might have something to do with it.

Sure do miss warm weather ... Dale is right about freezing Easters, too :(

  8. I find it very unlikely that it will be freezing that late down here. Right now its raining though so what to I know? I didn't bother to weather proof the inverter so will probably get the crap knocked out of me if I try it now. :(

  10. looks good

Any outhouse/compost house with a cement foundation is better than the ones I am used to

  11. It looks live your building in a rock quarry.

  12. Thank you, mister tffnguy. I just checked, and I am running a fever ... so that explains the chills.

I'll get better soon now that I know my body is rallying the troops to fight (and beat) this mean 'ol intruder :)

  13. OGT, It probably won't smell any better than the ones you're used to. (at least until I get some sort of vent system added.)

Scavenger, I added some native soil and rocks to the mix and I think I screwed up when I did that. Just needed more concrete so cut corners. Might not be a good idea to go in there barefooted.

MC, David works for me. I never have liked that mister crap. Makes me feel too young. Now get over what ever it is that you have. Doesn't sound like a lot of fun to me.

  14. David...here is the weather thingy I use for my forecasts. http://www.wunderground.com
Looks like ya gonna have high winds up till Friday.
Like they say to me...button down the hatches.

  15. Your guest house is looking good with its new blue tarp. It seems sturdy enough to withstand the winds up there and not blow your guests to the next county :-)

Good job on the foundation of your outhouse as well!!

  16. I have an outhouse at home. It's great. I'll never get rid of it.

  17. BB, I use that site for weather, but had forgotten that if you scroll down it gives more details. Thanks for reminding me! Looks like Sunday is going to be nice and in the 80s because here it seems to go along with the "Along the Rio Grand" forecast. Right now its dead calm outside, but the sun will probably bring on the wind.

MsB, I need to start building on the outbuilding today, but probably won't get much done between the wind and having to make a trip in to town for a shower, laundry and to try for the third time to catch someone at the storage office so I can pay my bill. Guess I'll also do a few other things while I'm there. Also looks like I'll have a ride share going in to.

pipsqueek, outhouses of the old fashion are illegal in Texas as it was pointed out to me Saturday by a visitor so that was the reason for the update. Guess I should do the politically correct thing and call it a Poop Composting Out Building? Maybe PCOB for short. ;)
