Got Ice? / Legion / Pepper

The Legion was out of ice today and from what I hear the whole area was out. The Grub Shack was closed so that was out and I didn't want to make a trip South just to find out there was none there either. I saw it coming so ate two of the last four hot dogs that were in the cooler (ice Chest) yesterday and gave the other two to Pepper. That took care of the perishables in there. I will make a trip in to SB tomorrow to see if the rumor is correct because I have other business there that I couldn't have taken care of today. Hopefully there will be some! Since I figured I'd need at least something cool to drink around here I decided to use the old school method of keeping stuff cool. In this case its a 1 gallon jug of lemonade RN brought on his last visit. I went to the storage part of the dungeon and found the ShamWow knock offs I'd bought at Harbor Freight about a year ago and added some water to the mixing bowl then wet the towel and put the jug in it and wrapped it around the jug. It did help a lot, but only to the point of keeping the lemonade half way cool. (considerably better than it would have been.) My grandmother had told me they used to keep butter and eggs fresh like this and OGT has posted something about this on his blog lately.

For those who want to know this Friday the legion will start selling prepared food again. I'm pretty sure it will be the same as before. (Darned good burgers, Nachos and Hot Dogs), but I hear they will also have Pizza. (One of my requests) Hope that goes over good because there is no other place to get pizza around here!

I went to the Legion earlier and had a few cool ones and used the computer there and while there I noticed a small brown dog crossing 118 and going up beside the Legion. I asked Dave the bar manager if he knew who it belonged to, but he said no.  About an hour ago I heard some growling out behind the dungeon and Pepper had the same small dog cornered by the shower. It was snarling and growling as I walked up and when it did the same at me I picked up a piece of tubing in case it tried to bite me. Well it bolted and Pepper was in hot pursuit!  I kept yelling at Pepper to get back here (Despite that causing my ribs to hurt), but it was to no avail. She chased it for quiet some time and I lost sight of it a few times so don't know if there was any biting or not? Pepper finally returned and I don't see any bite marks on here. Don't know about the small dog? Could have been rabid the way it was acting so I sure hope the vaccine Dale got pepper works!

If any of you in the area are reading this and know who the dog belongs to you might want to let them know the area it was in. Looked like a mix between a miniature doxin and and something else.

And the BUDWISER KID SAYS
It never rains in Terlingua.

  1. I wonder why the region is out of ice? Hope you are able to find some soon, but at least you took care of your perishables.

Good idea using that ShamWow to cool your jug of lemonade.

Did they close the Pizza parlor in Terlingua? I think they only opened it up a few days a week and only in the late afternoon.

  2. Long Draw Pizza - great pies and draft beer - they're still open just west of Terlingua (closer than Lajitas, but still a long way to travel). If I remember right, they're open Thursday thru Saturday evenings only, but you can call and find out 2608.

In the ghostown, the Boathouse has personal pizzas and the only other public pool table I know of in the area.

There's also Pizza Hut in Alpine and you can ask anyone who's going from Alpine to Terlingua to bring you a pizza.

  3. Thanks Just Me, that's the name of the place Long Draw Pizza :-D

  4. MsB, I think all of the ice in this region comes from Fort Stockton and they service Alpine as well as the area down here. Some places seem to get first priority on top of that. Being a holiday weekend and how fast ice melts down here now I guess they can't keep up with the demand?

Just Me, I've never found the Long Draw Pizza, but had heard they were only opened on a few days and in the afternoon at that. Being how it would probably be 20 miles away doesn't help either. It will be much easier just to drive the quarter mile to the legion and be able to get one 7 days a week from 12:00 noon until closing. With me I only get pizza cravings occasionally so that would fit in much better to.

  5. I know we talked about the sham wow material and how to make a evap using it. I'm curious to know if it sucks the water from the bowl and stays wet and how much cooler it would be as a medium.

Good news about the legion! I guess Im the same way about pizza. but my cravings for pizza are few and far between.

4 choices for food in just a small area out there. SUZIES SNACK SHACK , GRUB SHACK , AMERICAN LEGION , and TIVOS.

  6. OGT, the ShamWow type material does sort of suck the water up, but not totally. Once wet it will stay that way for a good while, but working up from where its in the water to higher up it will eventually dry out. I re-soaked the towel last night and the upper part was just barely damp this morning.

As for a differential it is basically just a swamp cooler without a fan. How cool it would keep something depends on two things. Temperature and Humidity. If the humidity is high then it will do very little good and if it is low it will work well. I'd say the best you could expect would be about 15 degrees difference IF the cooler is in the shade and the humidity is very low. It will NOT replace an ice box and there would be a lot of stuff that could go south that you would not want to use that for.

  7. Pepper Update.

She got in the middle of the road this morning and would not move when the neighbor lady was trying to go to work. I had to yell at her three times to get her to get out of the way. Then I just noticed that she has pulled another extension cord off of the top of the pallets on top of her shade area and chewed it up in two different places. She also chewed the spark plug boot off of the generator OGT brought down here and I don't have a clue where that is now.

  8. The way some of the U.S. treated returning Vietnam vets was horrible and I hope those people got their justice karma-wise. I never saw it first hand so I am thankful for that. Hopefully the media blew it up a lot worse than it actually was. I remember going to the Watts area of Los Angeles and seeing the burned out buildings from the Watts riots. On TV it looked like and depicted like half of the city was on fire when in actuality it was nothing more than a couple of blocks. This sensationalism sells ads but is so unresponsible. Anyway, I got an email with this website for a Vietnam veteran tribute. You click on the state and then the town for a list of the fallen heroes. Pretty cool. www.virtualwall.org

Sorry Pepper is such a pest. She'll settle down when she gets older but probably won't make it that long out there! I'd take her off your hands for you but live too far to come and get her. I have a fenced yard where she can run amuck and not get into much trouble. Oh well, good luck.

  9. Andy V, I'm sure the media built it up some, but I was spit at, but never on. Had to put up with a lot of insults thrown my way and such as that. When one of my buddies and I went to our old high school to visit a car load of guys pulled up to the curb and told us to leave, but then they sped off before we could get to them. Most of the people were cowards and would take off if we started at them. If anyone would have spit om me they would have gotten what they had coming.

As are as Pepper and fences go she likes to jump them. That's why she is here and not with Dale because they couldn't keep her in the fence.

  12. frann, I think she said they used linen or cheese cloth.

I don't expect Pepper will loose her life anytime soon and since I'm not going to drag her butt out of the dungeon anymore (not good for my health and well being) then she is probably safe. Anyone have a cattle prod they want to donate for training? ;)

  21. Okay, so I added an adorable avatar.

But, I may have over-stepped my boundaries by joining ... but that was the only way I could view the pics ... hope I'm not in trouble :(

  22. OGT, yes the place looks great now. Maybe one good side effect of the 5 day (more or less) shutdown The place got a remodel, painted and work done to make sure it would pass the inspection afterwords. It did with flying colors.

MC, I had asked Zano a good while back about setting up a site for the post and he gave the thumbs up. I took it as to set it up more or less like the real thing. Public welcome and in Members & Friends I think you classify as a friend of the legion so no problem until the powers that be tell me different. Saturday there will be a change of command and some old and some new officers sworn in so I guess time will tell how well the site is taken. I told Zano before I started it that if it caused trouble then I'd shut it down. We'll see how that goes.

  23. Thanks..I got to see the pictures.

  24. you alright out there? i heard its getting hot.

  25. Where did tffnguy go? As long as he's been gone, he must have walked to Alpine for that pizza and ice! I hope that he bought a big block of it because the bag would never make it home! Maybe that electrical storm that John talked about knocked out his communication!

  26. I just watched the Houston weather. The low pressure system resulting in your hot weather is stalled. The good news for me is when it gets done melting you it is heading back west and not comming my way. Just wanted to say thanks for turning the hot weather around!

  27. OGT, Fred, I'm still around. Updated the bold just now here at the legion. Its too HOT in the dungeon to use the computer much there other than to keep up with email.

frann, I don't care where the heat goes as long as it leaves here. ;)

  28. Howdy,

Try a jute bean sack or older style of feed bag made of jute for cooling things. We hung jute bags on our rabbit hutches when I was a kid and hosed them down three time a day to keep the animals cool.
