I'd been intending to put up gates on both ends of the road that runs through my property every since the Suber ruling, but doing it myself was out of the question and lack of funds postponed it also. Recently some of my friends offered to put the first one up free of charge (including the material) Now how could I turn down a deal like that? Anyway I'd been having to put up with a few speeders flying through my property kicking up dust, rocks and turning the little sharp rocks that cause flats and blowouts up. I have a few videos of that happening. I'll be adding the front gate as soon as I can, but it will more than likely just be a chain gate. Disregard the birdies behind the gate. Seen in the lower picture are my friends (left to right) Phil, Judy, Mike, Lisa and Ron. Thanks a bunch guys and gals!
As you can see in the above picture all the wild flowers have gone away and the yuccas seem to be about the only things blooming now. I want to try and get the trike going again soon where I can chain something to drag behind it and drag down the remnants of the wild flowers around here. They could lend to wild fires real easily. Of course I'd only do that up around the cabin and trailer area.
One of my aunts suggested some time back that I try one of the screen curtains for a screen for the cabin so the last time I went to Alpine I found one at the hardware store there. I had my doubts as to how long it would last with the high wind, but it has done pretty good so far. The magnets are just snapped together through the curtain and the wind blowing them around and slamming them up against the building some times has caused them to pop off. I've been using super glue to put them back on so once all are done like that I hope all will be well. It does catch most of the bugs and insures that no bats fly in here during the evenings chasing bugs.
Another one of my friends (Hollywood) brought by the two geodes yesterday and gave them to me. One of his friends cut them for him. After looking at them I'm pretty sure I've seen some of the raw ones around here, but where I've seen them who knows. Looks like I need to use the range extenders and go looking. The pictures do NOT do justice to the crystals inside them.
The heat is getting here slowly, but surely. Its 100 degrees here right now, but I can deal with that with a fan blowing on me in here and in a breeze outside. I'm not looking forward to the 115+ temps again, but I can run the AC when need be.

Suber ruling???? Can't find it on internet.
ReplyDeletetry terlingua suber ruling as a search.
DeleteThank you. I found it.
DeleteThose geodes are really pretty. Now you have to find one with real diamonds in it (grin).
ReplyDeleteDD if I found something like that I'd be too rich to talk to you. ;)
DeleteHa Ha Ha Ha ......the gate pictures are brilliant!!! Very good David!
ReplyDeleteVery photogenic people. ;)
DeleteI recognize any landowners right to gate their property - however this is a two edged sword - that will make it pretty tough for all to drive on Terlingua Ranch - if the majority of landowners follow your example? Those of us who are many miles from any paved road - will have an especially difficult time just getting to our property. An better alternative to the simple problem of excessive speed on your road would be a simple speed bump. Mr. Suber had far more serious problems he was trying to prevent - like dumping of trash in a gulley on his property, illegal hunting on his land (a former Hunt Park which he purchased), and outright vandalism (shooting holes in his windmill and other property). ------------------------------------------- I have several neighbors in the Nine Points Mesa Draw Valley - that have gated off their property and have forced me to take lengthy detours to avoid their gates. However, I am not going to retaliate by placing gates on my roads - to get even - as this would not be nice for my other neighbors. So yes, these are difficult problems. Just keep in mind that - you hurt your friends - as well an enemies - when you block long existing road ways. Cheers, Ronald Mahan
ReplyDeleteagree man, this guy has plenty of "enemies" there, Why tffnguy wants to have all his neighbors, landowners, visitors etc against his antisocial behaviors like this ? i do not follow this blog any more but found both antisocial and disgusting this his attitude to add to all the conflicts he s had with neighbors, Legion co-members etc, this guy might be a threat, he may remove this comment, but that is the reality, a very conflicting antisocial individual, sorry
DeleteRonald, its actually a good bit closer for people using this road to take the alternate rout to get to 118 (Which is usually where they are heading anyway.) In other cases where people may or may not own land somewhere out here and decide to sight see? Well I don't think they are supposed to do that anyway.
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteTffnguy,
the Mahan family has paid POATRI fees to maintain these "private roads" for in excess of 40 years! And no one has ever told me I am not supposed to use them to "sight see" - so I am “old school” and do drive these roads anywhere I want - to "sight see" - and get to all my friends places.
I do not trespass on other landowners property, nor do I go past locked gates. I figure if a man has gone to the expense of erecting a gate and locking it - Well - they have serious problems - and I do not want to be one of those problems - so I try to find an alternate route to where I am going. I have a few friends with locked gates - that give me a combination to pass thru their area. Different strokes for different folks. Life is too short to make a mountain out of a molehill!
The thing that galls me the worst, is the fact that only 37.3 percent of all ( nonexempt & exempt) Terlingua Ranch property owners now pay the POATRI FLAT FEE. The Mahan family detests these illegal fees - but pay them only to retain our right to vote and run for office.
There are two major reasons property owners do not pay fees.
1. The FLAT FEE was not approved by at least 50 percent of Members in Good Standing - therefore is an illegal fee. (HELL, less than 40 percent even voted.) It should also noted that the FAT CATS with hundreds or thousands of tracts or thousands of acres - have to pay the same fee - about $168 -- as the SMALL CAT with a 5 or 10 acre tract - which is very unfair! The FAT CATS are paying less in 2015 - than they were paying in 2005 - when we had NO SAY on our POATRI FEES.
2. Thirteen percent of the Terlingua ranch property owners are exempt from paying fees. And only about 1.5 percent do pay anything.
I have recommended that the POATRI board conduct a vote following our TERLINGUA RANCH MAINTENANCE AGREEMENT RULES - and let the paying property owners decide on what level of fees they wish to pay. Not like 2005 - when the POATRI board made the decision on what we would have to pay (NO SAY). I have further recommended that amnesty from past due fees be granted to delinquent non exempt property owners - THAT PAY THE NEW FEES FOR THREE YEARS. Another recommendation was that NON PAYING EXEMPT OWNERS NOT BE permitted to vote on the TRMA fees! WE do not want NON PAYING Exempt nor NON PAYING Non Exempt property owners voting ! Those non paying CATS will vote for HIGH fees - other people have to pay - and this totally corrupts the voting.
Cheers, Ronald Mahan
I don't remember saying any thing about LOCKED gates nor asking what you think about the Suber ruling.

DeleteLike I said before Pablo, get your own blog if you want to post your bullshit. You don't have a clue what's going on around here.
Deletehope no gates block access to my property, i only saw 1 road to it, and it ends there. got a question for you, you seem to know whats going on up there . saw a boathouse bar in middle of nowhere not to far from my tract. you anywhere near that? and hows crime? stats show high, but never trusted gov numbers. gonna make run up there last half oct sometime. I need to stake out where cabin going up. if you hear some cold rolled steel making noise, it may be me, unless alot is done by others.
ReplyDeleteSounds like your property is near the ghost town. I live about 35 miles north of there. Crime? That area is pretty laid back.
Deleteya, not to far from it. need a quite place since yanks are moving down to FL and crowding everything up.
Deletehows the mule deer and hog hunting?
ReplyDeleteIts growing up in Terlingua to. As far as deer and hogs? I couldn't say Have only seem one deer on my property and never a hog in the last 7 years.
ReplyDeletemaybe being closer to big bend i'll see some,
DeleteMaybe? Good luck.
Deletesaw where legion was on map, just up the rd apiece. should be fun to find tract without rd names. so far plan to leave here late this coming week(providing all plans with jobs here finished) and be up that way late sun or mon am. Then get topography of tract and pics (for build site) check out area and ghost town then head back . too bad home depot and lowes so far away, will have to bring a trailer to bulk up on bldg supplies when head back ..
ReplyDeleteGPS is the only way to go.
ReplyDeleteguess old tom tom coming of of storage, guessing alpine is the closest place to buy beer , ice , food..
DeleteCottonwood store in Study Butte has groceries, beer, ice and most other things you can think of. A little higher than stuff in Alpine, but a whole lot closer. There are restaurants in SB, the ghost town and on the way there. A once a month trip to Alpine for major supplies is good. BTW gas in SB is quiet a bit higher than in Alpine.
ReplyDeletewhat a gallon going for? 2.29-2.39 down here. gonna run to book store and get new atlas, my 20 year old one doesnt even have rds i live on now in it.
DeleteI don't know what gas is going for in SB because I buy it in Odessa when I'm there and Alpine when I'm coming back home. It was $2.27 in Alpine yesterday and I think $2.07 in Odessa. It is more than likely abound $2.50 a gallon or more in SB. Google earth is getting pretty good now at finding Terlingua roads if you know about where the road is.
ReplyDeletesouth county rd to salt grass rd then rest are un named. pulled them off satellite. wrote down directions as far as how many rds to pass before turning. should be an adventure . may end up making my own signs if the assoc doesnt have name for them. bring some range targets too. hey, have good holiday monday there.
DeleteIf the road you own property on isn't named and you call for a 911 address you can probably name that road. You may likely be able to name any roads (that aren't named) to get you to your road. I got to name two on my other property. They will likely also ask you to put up some sort of sign showing what road it is. Of course it will be a pretty good while before it gets added to Google Earth.
ReplyDeletejust got into Alpine today, gonna hit Penneys diner get some food and crash for night (23 hour drive)
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Terlingua.
ReplyDeletewas only there 2 days, needed to find what i owned. Hall was closed both time going past it. saw badlands tx.....sorry about glenn..i was back in south florida when i saw your post.... welcome. gonna be back out in a month or so, need to find trailer to haul bldg supplies from odessa to site . gonna put up small cabin. will have to have beer and pick your brains if your up for it.
ReplyDeleteLowe's seems to have the best lumber They will deliver, but its far from cheap. I never know when I'm going to have to go to Big Spring to have blood removed so good luck on finding me here.
