Terlingua Americn Legion... Will it close or???

The meeting to see if the District commander will pull the plug on the Terlingua American Legion will be held at 10:00 AM in the morning Sunday 02/09/2014. Any Terlingua residents who would hate to see this happen can show up at the legion around 10:00 AM. You will not be allowed in the meeting unless you are a member, but can join other supporters of our legion on the patio.

    1. The district commander was over ruled by his cabinet about having to sign up two new members a month. I was given one option and that was to remain the commander or allow the last regime to take over. I chose to remain the commander so the post is safe.

  2. Why did all that happen? In the end they said "never mind".
    Did someone want the place for something?
    Just curious.

  3. Rob, someone else has always wanted the building and land to use for other things than the Legion. The last commander had been angling to take it back also. Not sure which or either actually caused it. There was some flaky crap going on though.

  5. Suspect in Terlingua LA KIVA death still in jail

    By Jim Street editor@alpineavalanche.com | Posted: Thursday, February 13, 2014 9:48 am

    Tony Michael Flint of Terlingua was still in Brewster County Jail this week under $200,000 bond, charged with murder in the death last week of Glenn Felts, 50, owner of La Kiva Bar, who was found dead early Tuesday morning, Feb. 4, in the parking lot of his iconic Terlingua bar.

    District Judge Roy Ferguson denied a request by District Attorney Rod Ponton last week to increase the bond to $400,000.

    Ponton asked for the increased bond because of the nature of the alleged crime and concern over the safety of county residents. He said it would be a sign that the Big Bend community has no tolerance for homicide.

    “Bail of $500,000 was deemed reasonable in a first-degree murder case where defendant has no family ties in Texas, has moved residences at least once while in Texas and was last living in an extended-stay hotel and was not employed outside the house,” Ponton said in his motion.

    He indicated Flint could be a flight risk because he is from Missouri, has only been in Texas for a few years and travels frequently to Colorado. His pickup bore Utah license plates, according to a search warrant.

    Judge Ferguson issued the warrant last week for the 1991 model pickup for forensic evidence to be used in the case.

    In a statement to investigators after his arrest later in the day Feb. 4, Flint said he and Felts had been drinking heavily and, when they left together about midnight Monday, Feb 3, the victim fell and hit a rock near the front of the bar, causing injuries to his face and fist.

    Investigators said blood was found on Flint’s clothing and a hat similar to one witnesses described as worn by Flint that night was found at the scene.

    The affidavit for the search warrant said the death was “most likely due to blunt force trauma and the death would ultimately be classified as a homicide.”

    The 37-year-old river guide gave himself up the same day at the Terlingua Emergency Response Center.

    Investigators on the case came from the Brewster County Sheriff’s Office, the Texas Rangers and the 83rd District Attorney’s Office. When the investigation is complete, the matter will be referred to a Brewster County grand jury.

  6. Tffnguy,

    I suspect you picked a real winner in your choice of options.

    This is said because Chris Leland can no longer sell beer and wine at the POATRI Bad Rabbit Café! POATRI advised him they could no longer let him use the POATRI license to sell beer & wine. The POATRI Facebook Website - now indicates the Bad Rabbit Café is now a BYOB facility!

    I hope your sales increase during this dry spell of beer availability and you can make the Terlingua Ranch American Legion Post better than ever.

    best wishes,

    Ronald Mahan.

  7. I suspect the formerly closed Ranch Supply Store (at the Terlingua Ranch entrance) will reopen selling beer to fill the void - if it has not already reopened.

  8. Tffguy,

    Just saw something new about the Bad Rabbit Café in the Freedom for Terlingua Ranch Web Site!
    V. Viles posted the following information:

    ~~~~
    THE BAD RABBIT'S new roof by DW Construction from Marfa!!!
    THE BAD RABBIT will reopen on Tues, Feb 25th,with new management!!
    Mike Melot from Comanche, TX will be our new café management.
    Mike also owns and operates "Miguels" in Comanche.
    Welcome Mike !!!!
    ~~~~~

    Sounds like Chris Leland is no longer Manager - but I don't know if the BRC will continue as a BYOB Facility - as the new management may have a TABC license.

    I will keep you posted on these forever changing POATRI developments

    Cheers

  9. Tffguy,

    The POATRI board just posted this information:

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    A Statement to ALL Property Owners
    We ( the BOD and Manager) have been doing our best to bring the ranch and lodge area back to it's former appearance and attraction for the owners and their guests.
    The policies and Procedures for obtaining contracts to do this work and to buy supplies for our own staff to complete as much of the work as possible have been followed as closely to the letter as we can. For those not familiar with areas as remote as Terlingua, contractors are few and far between. In our efforts to save money, we have solicited bids for everything and always strive to go with the lowest responsive bidder. In so doing, we have saved almost 50% from this process on both contracting and supplies.
    For those who have been wondering about our practices, we invite you to look at our books. The treasurer is forming the requisite financial committees to do this for you, so look forward to their reports.
    As for the decision to remove beer and wine from the cafe, we have tried for 2 years to make this work, including changes to the aggreement with the cafe and it was not successful. The lessee had the choice to go ith a BYOB policy or obtain their own TABC permit and decided to go BYOB.
    On the decision to close the cafe and re-open with a new "operator" the decision was made due to multiple failures to operate within the lease agreement and a demand for action letter.
    The new operator has agreed to keep the cafe open at least through our spring break rush and may seek to obtain a lease through the normal RFP process.
    All possible efforts were made to continue a successful operation with the current lessee, but to no avail.
    We are looking for all interested parties to submit a proposal to operate the Cafe.
  12. Rob & Budweiserkid,
    Don Mahan & I have been POATRI opponents for many years.
    When POATRI finally does something good for property owner interests - like get rid of a Café Manager who repeatedly violates his lease agreement - then that also should be made public. That is why the available information was posted.
    Best wishes - Ronald Mahan
  13. Latest information on BRC:
    The Bad Rabbit Café will still be a BYOB facility - because the new Manager does not have a TABC license and POATRI can no longer let people who lease the café - use the POATRI license.
    On the positive side - The new Manager Mike Melot also operates a restaurant named "Miguels" in Comanche, Texas. Food in that Mexican/Southwestern style café was rated by customers - as No 2 - of 12 restaurants in Comanche.
    Not near as many places to eat on the Terlingua Ranch - so give the new manager - Mike Melot - a big welcome!
    Best wishes
    Just a peak into why the VA is so screwed up! The assholes were destroying the backlog of requests they were getting.
    They ought to be horse whipped.
    1. Matt, that is common with the VA. I've applied for VA disability twice through the mail and when confronted in person why I haven't heard back the answer was "We never received them." Yeah.... Right.
  17. Tffnguy,
    Guess this would be marginal better than a trip to El Paso?
    ~~~~~~

    Staff Report
    NewsWest 9

    MARFA - The small town of Marfa is getting a V.A. clinic.

    The V.A. Medical Center in El Paso decided to put one there because of the veteran population.

    The clinic will be staffed with a registered nurse, a licensed vocational nurse and a medical clerk.

    Doctors and providers in El Paso will be able to work with patients in Marfa thanks to a television-type technology that provides a high-quality picture.

    There's no word on when the clinic will open.
    ~~~~~~
    Cheers,
    Ron Mahan
  18. You should encourage the VA clinic as the next step would be a nurse practitioner who could diagnosis and prescribe directly without the video feed.
  19. I went to the store the first day it opened and they have enough stuff to save us some gas so I'm happy with it. Of course SB will be where I do most of my shopping though.
    The new large VA clinic in Odessa is supposed to open up next month and it think it will be connected to or real near the Medical Center Hospital there. Might be the Vet's best chance, but of course finding a place to stay there could be a real problem.
    As far as the clinic in Marfa goes they have one in Fort Stockton, but its only open two days a week and is pretty worthless to me. Hopefully soon I'll have the Jeep up to par where I can use the one in Odessa when needed. I don''t have any liking for El Paso at all.
    Terlingua death suspect free on bond
    Tony Michael Flint, 37, was released from Brewster County Jail on $200,000 bond this week. He was being held in connection with the Feb. 4 death of Terlingua bar owner Glenn Felts.
    Flint, who was a river guide with ties to Colorado and elsewhere, admitted to Deputy Sheriff Sean Roach after Felts had been found dead in the parking lot of his bar that the two had been drinking heavily and left the bar together about midnight.
    He said Felts had fallen and hit his head on a rock. But witnesses and other evidence at the scene suggested there had been a fight at the bar.
    There was a funeral service for Felts Saturday and people came from several states to attend
