Chance of Rain?

Maybe? Usually when there's a 10 to 20% chance around here it rains everywhere around here, but not here. At 40 to 50% there is a fair chance of at least getting a few sprinkles. Sure wish I had the catchment setup just in case, but no chance of that before I get the cast off. I could sure use the water.

Speaking of cast just 12 more days until I can loose it. Of course I've been told I won't be able to do much with my arm until I can get the strength back in it, but at least it will be real nice not to have the cast on. Maybe I can get back to working on the cabin at least some.

I'm still going at it with the VA trying to get back in the system so I can use the hospital or clinic if I need to, but as of yet they are still screwing me around.

its me captain crunch again. Good luck dealing with the VA. It should be as easy as showing them your DD-214 and your in.

can't understand why so many vets are getting screwed. Im really lucky myself, no runarounds. The only problem I have is with the VA clinic here in corpus. It really is small and it really sucks.
The VA medical center in San Antonio for me has been really professional. Im going to have to move outside of San Antonio if I want to continue to get medical service at the hospital in San Antonio.
Im looking at Kerrville and other places that are not to far from that medical center.
Where is the nearest VA facility for you guys in Terlingua?
I hope its not too far.

Move outside of San Antonio to get service at the San Antonio Hospital? What are you saying?

  6. Me to DD.

CC there is a clinic in Fort Stockton, but I've never been to it. The closest VA hospital is in Big Springs which is about 280 miles from here. I've already sent them a registered copy of my DD-214 twice and they still keep dragging their feet.

    Thanks Allen.

VA medical centers cover a "region" if your in a certain region, you can go to that hospitol. What makes Audie Murphy Medical Center (in San Antonio) so special is thats its connected to University of Texas Medical School right next door and so top notch teacher doctors are at Audie Murphy all the time helping veterans.

    Tffnguy

You may have to drive there (Fort Stockton) and show them your DD-214. Call first, they may want a DNA sample, Urine sample or sample of something much more unpleasant, just to prove that you are you and a veteran.
Dont you guys just love goverment:)

    1. The way I read it it sounded like you can't live in San Antonio to get service at Audie Murphy. "...have to move outside San Antonio"

  8. CC, they didn't give me an option to go to the clinic. They said it would either be by mail or go to the hospital in Big Springs. I guess I should have gone to the hospital so they could have really pissed me off when they started screwing me around.

  9. It's horrible all the hoops our vets have to jump through to get service. Almost everyone I know has serious problems with the VA system.

    1. Not all Vets are eligible for the VA system. Even though I am a Vietnam era vet, a lack of service oriented disabilities and an income higher than VA's predetermined threshold keeps vets like me out of the system. In Brewster County the income threshold is about $27k per year.

    2. rj, I fit in about half that, was a combat vet and have service connected disabilities. They are just screwing me around. The worst part of it all is that they conveniently lost me out of the system and a few years back they went through the FBI to find vets that had supposedly lost their information (ID Theft) because of some dick head with the VA having the info on a laptop that got stolen. The info wasn't even supposed to be on a laptop.

  10. Denese, not sure why, but it seams some people don't have a problem getting help from the VA, but some do. It shouldn't be like that.

  11. my check should be coming in soon. the VA says I aint never been to nam. what do they know.

  12. Nick, they have a mental hospital across the highway from the VA in Big Springs. That might be a good place for you to start.

  13. been there done that, they dont have HBO

  14. Well DAMN Nick that sucks! pretty nasty weather here right now. this trailer may wind up in far south Brewster county or Mexico.

I think the secret to get VA service is to constantly stay in the system with appoinments six months to a year out. I went through a lot of medical crap since 2008, and in 2009, 2010 had several surguries. Im finishing up now on some stuff.
Im not retired by anymeans and sitting around the house watching the grass grow sucks.

I cant go back to the career I had before 2008 becouse of the injuries I have so I got to find something new to do.
I thought about going back to school to be a Gunsmith and working at a gunstore or doing some apprenticeship thing somewhere.
I do a lot amatuer gunsmith work for trusted friends and nieghbors for beer and barter. I just did my first AR builds on two stripped recievers this weekend for myself. Im confident I can do the third for someone else (for beer or course)

I dont want to live in San Antonio, If I did live in San Antonio, I could still go to Audie Murphy hospitol. The way the VA works is you go to the clinic in your local area. If they send you to a VA medical center, you go to that regions VA medical center. Audie Murphy covers Baxer, San Patricio, Kerr, and other surrounding counties.
Im looking at smaller towns in the Hill Country that are still an hour or so drive to San Antonio for medical or whatever.

    RJ,

on that $27.000 a year cutoff in Alpine the VA has, are you sure about that. A couple of years ago, the VA raised the income level to $30.000 or $35.000. I could be wrong?
All veterans are entitled to services regardless of income or whatever. I hate to sound like a democrat, but thats part of the package for someone who puts their life on the line for this country.

    1. I believe that Bush put the income test in place with legislation in 2003. More recently Obama's administration may have allowed a 10% leeway to enter the lowest priority 8 eligibility. There are financial exception categories besides service associated disabilities including recent service, purple hearts, etc.

Yeah' I was not sure on the details. I hope you and Tffnguy (and other vets) will be able to access services without restrictions.
The way I see it, as soon as anyone raises their right hand and takes the oath, that service member just become a target for a whole lotta bad guys worldwide. There should be a whole lotta benefits for those who complete thier service honorably.

  18. Off topic but I just heard that Carroll Shelby died on Thursday.

Did he own the Terlingua Ranch or just a large section of land in the area?

    ReplyDelete
  19. FD, as far as I know he owned all of the ranch at one time. He will be missed even though I never knew him personally. (always wanted to, but a few people down here did) He inspired me and many other people)

  20. And he started the Turlingua Racing Team. I didn't know he died.
