Foots / Rain / Lost

The Foots came down Friday and I intended to be here if they stopped by. Bigfoot had said they would be here about noon and I went to Study Butte early to get some supplies and take a shower. When I got here a little before noon I found the following laying up against the cabin and inside.
The doors are exterior and one of them will work quiet well for the front door on the cabin. Not sure what I'll do with the second one yet, but I bet I can figure it out. The one I got from Dennis is now going to be a 36" x 6'6" outdoor table.

The paint is light lime green and should be plenty enough to paint the exterior of the cabin to protect the OSB until I can get it either stuccoed or get a different color paint I like. They also left a small window just about an inch bigger than I intended to install on each side of the cabin, but with just a little work I can make it work the same way. (Forgot to get a picture of it)

The chairs are very well made and should hold up pretty darned well unlike the cheap Chinese crap out there. Also has plenty of pockets for all sorts of  storage which will make it real nice. They are made in China to, but the tubing and fabric are sturdy enough for even big guys like Bigfoot.

Rain
We started getting a little rain yesterday evening, but only a couple of 10ths and later the foots and I met up at the Legion to visit. While we were there it came a real turd floater. It netted about 1 1/4 inch of rain in a fairly short time. The foots decided to go to their cabin and since their new/used vehicle is only 2 wheel drive I was afraid they may not make it home because there is a nasty wash going to their place and the roads had all turned in to rivers by then. Well they took off before me and I lost them. I took the same rout I figured they would take, but never found them. I took a wrong turn since you couldn't even see the roads. All you could see was water. I put the jeep in 4X4 mode and with taking the wrong turn wound up way further out in the ranch than I should be. I finally found a safe place to turn around (high ground) and put the peddle to the metal headed back the direction I knew I'd have to go to get back home. Several times even with moving fast enough to kick up a huge rooster tail of water I almost slowed to a crawl in the muddy road which would have meant stucksville and spending the night in the jeep. The wipers weren't keeping up with all the rain and muddy water being thrown up on the windshield so a lot of my driving was blind. I think I managed to stay in the road though because I didn't hear any bushes hitting the jeep.

Lost
Not really. I knew which way to go to get back here. just wasn't sure I'd make it. I was still worried about them this morning, but using the binoculars it seems they probably made it home.

  1. Well at least you didn't get stuck and break your front axle like I did.

  3. David, you are sure lucky and having a 4x4 was necessary. I was in a bad spot one time and my front drive went out. Day transfer case messed up. Everyone bad out and pushed.

  5. Off topic but, I heard through a 1500 mile grapevine that Ringo the owner of the Study Butte store passed away. I hate to say it but the poor old guy is probably glad to be gone. RIP.

  6. Bkid, I didn't know anything was wrong with him until a few days ago when one of the woman (Think maybe family?) at the Study Butte store told me he was in the hospital and she hoped he could get straightened out. I guess not. You are the first one I've heard this from.

Outside of his unwillingness to fill propane tanks at times I liked him fine. BTW the store seemed to be going down hill fast after his wife got killed in the car accident. I wonder what will happen now? I think he was the only one certified to do the propane thing there so that may come to an end? BBMI is now filling propane tanks so I guess that will get covered. Like you said RIP Ringo.

  8. Thanks SUERTE and the same to you. If I'd had the catchment setup I'd now have a full water tank.

  9. Tffnguy..good to see you and some other neighbors during our fast trip. Right at the moment we are rolling down I-20 at 75mph as I type. We stopped at Big Spring to gas up and I went in first while Lilfeets walked Underfoot, and loaded up on 4 ice cream samiches at 2/one dollar....then she went inside, and got 4 more of the same, not knowing I had some already. We ate all 8 of them quickly as we got back on the highway.

That late night rain/storm drive back to the cabin was a littyle hairy, we stopped at the deep ditch we have to cross and thought about it for a few minutes. It was either sleep in the 4runner or make a go of it. With Ezra Brooks (whiskey) as my mentor I threw it in "D" and we plowed through, with no issues. Spun out sideways a bit as we neared the gate, but kept the peddle down made it fine. Thanks for trying to look out for us, but I had no idea you were trying to follow us...too much rain, wind and lightning.

Back to the salt mine tomorrow..and DFW traffic.

Hope the arm keeps getting better.

  15. Glad you made it home. That storm was vicious - the wipers were no use at all. I really don't like driving in that kind of storm. Did you get hail yesterday? We had almost baseball size. No serious damage so far reported.

Ringo passed away Sunday morning. No arrangements yet.

  16. Nick, I guess that makes you the Travel'in Man.

Denese, No hail here and I'm sure glad. With that large of hail I'm real surprised a lot of stuff wasn't screwed up.

Heard about Ringo from Bkid. Too bad... From what I've heard the store may be in real jeopardy?

  19. That is some nice stuff you scored from the Foot family, may they receive as many blessing in return.

Wow, that storm does not sound like something I would want to be stuck in. Glad you got the liquid gold though.

I am a little late to the post but thank you for your service to our country :)

  20. Thanks MsB. At least there was no hail with all the rain. So far SB / Terlingua has had two real bad hail storms and 3 miles north of here has had a really bad one with lots of damaged, but we have been spared so far.
