Follow ups

If all else fails SCREW IT! Which is what I did to the PVC joints on the catchment that came loose. There's a 20% chance of rain today, tonight and tomorrow. It looked like the bottom could drop out earlier, but now that I have the catchment fixed you can be sure it won't. I could sure use it though because the hose I patched that lost me 100+ gallons of water busted again yesterday and there went another 50+ gallons before I caught it.

I was using a set of jumper cables to temporarily tie the new batteries to the old ones in the battery hut. That kept giving me trouble so I did it right this morning and used 5/8 inch copper tubing to make buss bars out of. Works MUCH better now!

  1. Looks like you got all things under control. Let it cloud over and let it rain.

  2. I can always hope DD. I started running the AC, but the little genny isn't enough to keep the batteries up while its cloudy so had to turn it off. Oh well its only 87 degrees with 500% humidity. ;) For some reason now the little genny will not run the AC by its self. Grrr...

    1. Maybe you can hook your car battery to the battery bank and run your engine for around 20 min every hour or two or more. Maybe use a remote starter. That arrangement may be close to fuel burn of that generator..

  3. dfwntexas, I've got a 130 amp alternator rigged up and run by a 6.5 HP motor that does wonders, but I haven't been able to keep a motor running lately. It has a brand new harbor freight motor on it now (Chinese), but that only lasted for one 2 hour run. I need to get a decent motor for it.

  5. More or less a quick fix Sandy. I just didn't want to loose anymore catchment. I'll redo it later.

  6. PVC glue works too LOL (And isn't expensive to buy.)

Glad your precious rain water isn't going to go to waste in future though.

  7. Did you run out of Duct Tape?

  8. It was glued with PVC glue Dani and it pulled apart anyway. I sure hope no more water goes to waste!

Matt, Duct tape doesn't last until the water gets hot down here.

  11. I find the Blue PVC glue is weak but if you use the primer and standard PVC glue it should never come apart. In addition a few pipe supports will help.,

  12. Looks like that screw did the trick. Did you get any more rain out your way today?

  13. rj, I plan to redo it as soon as I can and will do a better job of it then. For now its up and may help because its raining. I NEED IT!

Just got back from the legion and found a ball valve had blown out and I just lost another 75 gallons of water. Grrr... That makes over 225 gallons I've lost to the damn hose busting twice and then the Chinese valve blowing out.

MsB, yes a storm came through about 6:00 yesterday afternoon and I got a half inch out of it. (Didn't come close to the water I've lost and could have done better, but the catchment pipe is still leaking like a sieve. The storm also took out the phone and internet and it just came back up about 30 minutes ago so I'm just now able to post again. You never realize how much you depend on the phone and internet until its gone. ;)

  14. Purple primer then clear glue, a slight twist and it's stuck for life. Now for all of that Chinese crap, you get what you pay for and we all know that you're not paying much for that crap. Maybe you should just bite the bullet and hook up to that good ole American electricity running right down the highway.
