Cone Nosed

Looks like I finally got nailed by one. Least wise it looks something like this on other people I seen bit by them. Its red, swollen and painful. Seems to be getting larger all the time to.

I call this photo from last night "Fire On High".

  2. No fun at all Rubye Jack. Problem is I haven't seen any lately, but they like to hide.

  5. As long as it's not a brown recluse. Do you have them in that area? How big are those cone nose things?

My husband stepped on a scorpion today. It did not sting him, he just killed it...thank god..

  6. Terry, I've killed them as small as about a quarter inch long and about as big as 3/4 inches long. I doubt they get any bigger than that.

I couldn't rule out a brown recluse because I didn't see what actually bit me. I for sure hope it wasn't a recluse though. I just took a Benadryl tablet to see if it will help with the swelling.

  7. I hope it gets better. It looks crazy in that picture...watch for a dark spot in the middle. That is a sign of brown recluse...

  8. I'm watching it pretty close Terry.

  9. Are these the same bugs that spread Chagas disease further south? I guess they don't spread it (yet) in Texas, but it is some really bad stuff.

  10. Yup JiW, but like you say its supposedly too far north for Chagas? Hope so anyway.

  11. David - try putting some honey on it :) Seriously. (got a blog entry on honey next week)

  12. Dani, I know it is one of the best antibiotics creams around. I'll see how it looks later today.

  13. Wow, that doesn't look like fun at all.

On the positive side, there are worse places it could have bit you.

  14. FD, yes you are right about it could be in a worse place. I'm glad it wasn't north or south. Its looking a lot better this morning, but now I can tell that what ever it was nailed me twice just about a half inch apart.

  15. I am so sorry, that does look painful. Was going to suggest Benadryl but you already thought of that.

  16. MsB, any time I have swelling or redness from an insect bite I head for the Benadryl. Its helped quiet a few times.

  17. Cen and So Tx 2 highest risk areas. They like to bite around the mouth and eyes. Will cause flu like symtoms, and u think u recover. But only way to tell is a blood test for Chagas. I've had a couple of bites similar to yours, not sure what bit me. Really don't think it was one of them.

  18. Don't know TnT, all I know is I've killed plenty of them both inside and out. I guess I won't worry too much unless my arm falls off or it were to get a lot worse one.

  19. Well at least it wasn't a Black Widow, if it had been we most likely wouldn't be reading this post.

  20. No Bkid, I'm sure it wasn't a black widow. That's about all I'm sure of. Also if it was a recluse I'd suspect the skin around the bites would be rotting away by now?

  21. The swelling and redness is gone now and only the two single puncture or bite marks show which are about an half inch apart. Guess I'm going to live. ;)

  22. I have been bit by a conenose bug and it looked something like that(on my back). Looked like 3-4 bites that got swollen and ran together. I am close to La Grange, Tx. Bit at night, didn't feel anything, then later started to itch, itching redness go away after a few days. I have sent the bugs that I caught (1 every few months, 1 in my bed) to the texas dept of health and they test them for the parasite that gives you Chagas. 2 out of 5 were positive, woman called from Center for Disease control and said I need a blood test for Chagas to be safe, very unlikely I have it but I am going to go get the bloodwork done soon. Hope this is not what got you.

  23. Dennis, I keep hearing we are too far north for them to carry Chagas, but if 2 of 5 you sent in were then I guess Texas being too far north is a myth? I don't plan to have any blood work done any time soon though. I know of several people down here that knew they were bitten by them and as far as I know they didn't get tested either.

Of course if CDC wanted to foot the bill I might.

  24. Oh BTW I hear there isn't a cure for it so I guess you either have it or don't?

  25. probably worry too much bc my Brother's dr said all the cdc had was a couple of dead dogs in Texas from Chagas disease and he wasn't worried about it. But seems like creatures are moving north bc drought etc. A fiend said there was a drug but it could be bad for your body. If I get tested I'll post results.
