Blooms, Birds, Fires & Clouds

Only seen one of the strawberry cactus blooming so far and that's right on the other side of the road and on my property. There are plenty more down here, but for some reason that's the only one blooming. I should have some fruit before too long if the birds and rodents don't get them before I do.
A road runner up on my neighbor's back porch. Picture taken by him. (Robert Dawson) Matter of fact the rest of the pictures down were taken by him.
He sent me an email last night saying to look to the southeast at the fire. I'd already turned off the computer and missed the message and seeing the fire. There were storms all around, but not here and its assumed this fire was started by lightning since it was on Burro Mesa in the park. That's fifty miles from here and where Robert took the picture from. It was late so the picture didn't come out too good. According to an EMS person at BBMI they decided to let it burn because there was no way to get to it by vehicle.
Smoke from the fire just south of Bee Mountain in Study Butte.

What appears to be a funnel cloud taken during surrounding storms here. My neighbor saw it and took the picture and I saw it and failed to get one. It seems to be rotating as it dropped, but never made it to the ground.

  1. I hear you lucky people down there actually got some rain. We are still waiting. Has been almost a year, a half inch since last October. we are down about 4 feet.

  2. DD, its pretty near raining all the way around here again today, but probably won't rain here. Just the way that usually works. I won't gripe if it does though. ;) It sure doesn't help the solar out though.

  3. Slow rain here now, but some areas have gotten hammered. Probably about another tenth of an inch here so far. Its dropped from about 104 in here to 84 in a fairly short period. Sure feels good!

  7. Pictures of cactus in bloom make me ache to be there. And, there is nothing like the desert after a rain storm. It comes to life.

  8. Btw - I really enjoy your blog. I spent time in the Big Bend 30 years ago - and Terlingua was uninhabited when they weren't cooking chili.

  9. Matt, you probably wouldn't recognize it now then. Its building up more all the time. If the border patrol keeps it up that trend may reverse though.

  10. Dani, I can assure you road runners do exist outside of the cartoon. Lots of them down here and the good part is they kill rattle snakes. I don't think the sweat the coyotes any more in real life than in the cartoons either. ;)

  13. Beautiful cacti!
That's a good picture of the funnel cloud just beginning to take shape. I've got to get a camera!
You are so lucky to live in the desert.
We've been having some nice thunderstorms here in SE Oklahoma -- hit and miss, but we got some nice rain yesterday -- okay a drop in the bucket. :-)

  14. Wh did everyone else get rain except us? I want our desert to be green.

    Road runners are real.

  15. Nick, you're a man of few words. (Few words that anyone can understand that is.)

Frann, do you have any strawberry cactus around there? Nothing else blooming around here besides that one that I've seen.

Linda, again there was rain all around here yesterday to, but none right here either. I guess you could call it hit and mainly miss here to. All depends on how you look at it as far as being lucky living down here.

Denese, you'll should have brought some rain back with you. ;)

  16. Lemme know when your cactus has fruit, please thanks :)

It rained all around us, too, but we only got a few sprinkles. Cooled off the evening, though, and that was nice.
